Habitat for Humanity of Dane County hires CEO
by Staff
August 02, 2012

MADISON — Following a three-month search process, Valerie Johnson (formerly Valerie Breunig) has been named chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity of Dane County.
For seven years, Johnson served as executive director of the Worldwide Foundation for the World Council of Credit Unions in Madison. The Foundation developed credit union programs that funded housing and community projects throughout the world. Prior to her work at the World Council of Credit Unions, she was director of development for the Agronomic Science Foundation.
“Valerie has a genuine desire to help create stronger communities in Dane County for low to moderate income families,” said George Kamperschroer, president of the HFHDC Board of Directors. “Her enthusiasm for moving Habitat for Humanity forward is amazing. She has worked extensively in program development in the financial industry. With Valerie as its leader, the Worldwide Foundation helped credit unions in countries devastated by natural disasters to rebuild businesses, homes and communities.”

“I'm excited to join the Habitat for Humanity team, which is making such a difference in the lives of families in the Dane County,” said Johnson. “Home ownership improves lives, makes communities stronger and brings people together.  I look forward to working with Habitat staff, leaders, supporters and volunteers to carry out this important mission.”
Since Habitat for Humanity of Dane County was formed in 1987, it has partnered with 200 families to build simple, decent and affordable homes in Dane County.  Currently, it is building 16 to18 homes a year.
Johnson graduated with distinction from University of Wisconsin-Madison with majors in Ag Extension and Ag Journalism. She currently serves on the board of directors of the 4-H Foundation and the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences Alumni Association at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Johnson lives in Waunakee and has two grown children.
HFHDC CEO Perry Ecton stepped down in April after accepting a position as executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Broward in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The search committee was led by Kamperschroer.
